Dr. Brandeis Marshall, Chair and Associate Professor of Computer and information Sciences has been awarded a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation in the amount of $399,903 for her project entitled “Data Science eXtension (DSX): Incorporating Data Science Fundamentals in the Curriculum at Spelman and Morehouse Colleges”. This project will train faculty on data science principles, develop and implement data science curriculum at the undergraduate level and to broaden awareness of data science to underrepresented minorities at the bachelor’s level. Data science is emerging as a distinct interdisciplinary area of study, including but not limited to applied statistics, biology, business analytics, business intelligence, chemistry, computer science, data analytics, data mining and information management. Dr. Gosha Kinnis, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Morehouse College will serve as co-PI on this project.

During the 2015-2016 Academic Year, Spelman’s Institutional Review Board (IRB), reviewed 103 research proposals, a 15.5% increase from the 2014-2015 AY. The committee consisted of 17 members, seven of whom were new members. The majority of proposals, 65% come from the social science. All proposals during this period were expedited reviews (no anticipated risk or minimal risk to human subjects) and were reviewed electronically. Most proposals, 58, were reviewed and approved in 6 weeks or less.
The American Council of Learned Societies has opened its applications system for the 2016 cycle. ACLS offers several fellowship opportunities for faculty in the humanities. The programs that are of most interest to Spelman faculty are the Burkhardt Residential Fellowships for Recently Tenured Scholars and the ACLS Fellowships. Note that the Burkhardt rrequires some institutional commitment which must be cleared by the provost’s office.
