Medium: Bamboo, soil, fire, grass seeds and two mixed media sculptures
Dimensions: 20ft (H) x 25ft (W) x 45ft (L)
Date: 2005
Location: Downtown Sumter, South Carolina
Project Budget: DNA
Description: This time-based, multi-media work included an environmental art
installation, a performance art ritual and the growing of grass over a prolonged period. It
was created as a healing service for the enslaved that were tortured and perished in South
Carolina during the period of enslavement. Audience members were invited to write the
names of their ancestors that were either enslaved or enslavers on a piece of paper and
place it in the fire. Two weeks after the fire grass began to sprout as a rebirth after a
tragedy.
