Mini Grants Available to attend the NIH Regional Seminar, May 3-4, in Washington, DC

The NIH Regional Seminar serves the NIH mission of providing education and training for the next generation of biomedical and behavioral scientists. This seminar is intended to:

  • Demystify the application and review process
  • Clarify federal regulations and policies
  • Highlight current areas of special interest or concern

Who Should Attend? The seminar and optional workshops are appropriate for those who are new to working with the NIH grants process – administrators, early stage investigators, researchers, graduate students, etc. For those with more experience, the seminar offers a few more advanced sessions, updates on policies and processes direct from NIH staff, as well as valuable presentation resources to share with your institution.

Who are the Presenters? The NIH Regional Seminar involves approximately 65 NIH and HHS staff who are brought to a central location in order to educate, share, and hear your questions over the course of two days, plus the pre-seminar workshops.  This seminar is your opportunity to make direct contact with NIH policy officials, grants management, program and review staff, and representatives from the HHS Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP), HHS Office of the Inspector General (OIG), and others.  In addition, take advantage of discussions involving more than 600 fellow attendees from around the world.

In addition to learning more about the NIH grants processes and policies through the optional workshops and 2-day sessions, there are opportunities throughout the seminar to Meet the Experts 1:1. These 15 minute chats are a great way to get more specific questions answered by NIH & HHS experts.  You’ll have the opportunity to sign up in advance or on-site to speak with the expert(s) of your choice participating in the seminar.  With the Washington location in the backyard of the NIH, expect even more NIH & HHS experts to join us.

NYU’s Mega-Grants Initiative is offering 5 mini-grants to defray the costs of registration, travel and attendance at the 2018 NIH Regional Seminar.  To be considered for a mini-grant, please send an email indicating your interest in attending the Seminar, along with your budget request to Mega-Grants Project Officer Trinh Eng at trinh.eng@nyu.edu by March 12.  (The deadline for regular registration is March 16.)

To explore more and register directly for the NIH Regional Conference, please visit the website.

Highlight Your Scholarly Accomplishments in the AUC Faculty Publications Bibliography

In February 2006, the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library hosted its inaugural faculty scholarship celebration and compiled the Atlanta University Center Faculty Publications: A Selected Bibliography.  This living document has been updated annually and can be accessed through the Digital Commons @ Robert W. Woodruff Library link on the website. The event has afforded the library with a mechanism for identifying the scholarly works of AUC faculty, and insuring that those titles are added to the Woodruff Library collection. During the week of March 19–23, 2018 the Library will host its annual Celebration of AUC Faculty Achievements, recognizing AUC faculty scholarship across all disciplines. An exhibit of selected faculty works from member institutions will be on display throughout the week.

This is an opportunity to highlight your scholarly accomplishments as a part of this celebration, and include your work(s) in the Atlanta University Center Faculty Publications bibliography.  Please forward a list of your publications or a copy of your curriculum vitae to Jordan Moore by Wednesday, March 7. Also, if you are interested in being a presenter during this week of celebration, please contact Ms. Moore to discuss logistics and arrange a time to present.

You are also encouraged to deposit your works in the AUC Woodruff Library Digital Commons e-scholarship institutional repository.  Established in 2005, the e-scholarship institutional repository currently hosts over 9,200 full text items.  These resources have been downloaded more than 883,000 times. Benefits of contributing to AUC Woodruff Library e-scholarship repository include:

  • Support of open access and scholarly communication initiatives;
  • Global exposure and discovery of your research through search internet engines;
  • Promotion of new forms of scholarly publishing including born digital peer-reviewed journals; and
  • Distribution of and access to federally funded research.

Faculty interested in depositing their works into the AUC Woodruff Library Digital Commons institutional repository are encouraged to contact Christine Wiseman, Digital Services Unit Head, at 404-978-2038 or cwiseman@auctr.edu.

Grant Writing Mentoring Program for Jr. Faculty and Sr. PostDocs

The FRED (Faculty Research and Education Development) Program is a structured mentorship program designed to promote grant funding success for junior faculty or senior postdocs at minority-serving institutions (MSIs) and other institutions with a strong commitment to recruiting students from backgrounds underrepresented in STEM to the field of cell biology and related fields.

Each early-career scientist will receive individualized structured help for one year, using extensive feedback from a senior faculty research mentor with a strong track record of grant funding, with the goal of preparing a highly competitive research or educational grant proposal for submission to the NSF, NIH, or comparable funding agency. The program is structured to facilitate regular communication between the mentors and mentees, as well as several opportunities for more intensive collaboration on proposal development.

Highlights of the year-long program include:

  • Funding for attendance at a three-day summer workshop to:

–learn about funding opportunities
–work one-on-one extensively with their mentor
–get feedback on your proposal ideas from several mentors

  • Funding to attend the ASCB-EMBO Annual Meeting for a mock grant review panel for lots of feedback on the junior faculty’s proposal draft
  • Funding for exchange visits between the mentor’s and mentee’s institutions

Junior faculty applicants will need an appropriate program mentor before applying, but if you want to apply and need help finding a mentor, we can help! Both junior faculty and mentors must apply individually, and both must be ASCB members if accepted into the program.

For More information on the FRED program, visit the program website here.

The FRED Program is funded by the NSF and sponsored by ASCB’s Minorities Affairs Committee.

If you have any questions or need help applying or finding a mentor, email Dr. Sydella Blatch (sblatch@ascb.org).
