I’m now a professor emerita, but have been teaching Shakespeare in the spring of 2018 since my replacement had a research leave. I’m struck once again how relevant Shakespeare is. How does Hamlet check to see whether the ghost’s story is “fake news?” (He’s at school in Wittenberg where Luther posted his 95 theses and started the Protestant Reformation. One of Luther’s points was to deny the doctrine of Purgatory so Hamlet needed to check. Was it just the devil tempting him?) His solution: “The play’s the thing/Wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the King”. Of course you might need an English major to help interpret it.
